In many cases, gutters need to be temporarily removed or detached to properly replace fascia, since the fascia board sits directly behind where gutters are mounted. Trying to work around gutters without removing them often makes it hard to access the full board and can lead to a lower-quality repair.

That said, some minor fascia repairs can be done with gutters left in place, especially if only a small section needs patching and the gutter hangers aren’t in the way. For a full fascia replacement, though, removing the gutters is usually the safer and more thorough approach.

A few things to consider:

  • Removing gutters allows for a clean, complete fascia replacement
  • Reinstalling gutters afterward gives you a chance to check for damage or needed repairs to the gutter system itself
  • Skipping gutter removal can leave hidden rot or damage unaddressed behind the gutter line

Most experienced contractors plan for gutter removal and reinstallation as part of a fascia replacement project, since it leads to better results and helps avoid repeat repairs.
