Fascia goes on first, followed by gutters. The fascia board provides a solid, level surface for gutters to be mounted on, so it needs to be properly installed and secured before any gutter system goes up.

This order matters for a few reasons:

  • Gutters are typically hung directly onto or near the fascia board, so it needs to be structurally sound first
  • Installing fascia first allows for proper sealing and painting before gutters are in the way
  • It’s easier to inspect and prep the roofline when gutters aren’t blocking access

During a full exterior renovation, this is why many contractors remove gutters first if fascia needs replacing, then reinstall or replace the gutters once the new fascia is complete. Trying to install fascia around existing gutters often leads to a less secure, lower-quality result.
