Horizontal lap siding makes a house look bigger. The horizontal lines stretch the eye side to side, which makes the home feel wider and more substantial, especially helpful on narrow Utah lots.
Light colors help too. Whites, soft grays, and warm beiges reflect light and make walls seem to recede. Dark colors do the opposite; they shrink a home visually.
Wider siding panels also help. Fewer seams mean a cleaner, more expansive look.
Vertical siding, board and batten, or shingle styles work great as accents. But using them across the whole house adds visual clutter and can make it look smaller.
Best combo for size: light horizontal siding, minimal trim breaks, and a slightly darker roof and trim for contrast.
