Stone construction is rare in American homebuilding mainly due to cost and construction speed. Wood framing has long been the standard in the U.S. because it’s faster, more affordable, and widely supported by an established supply chain and skilled labor force.
Other reasons stone construction isn’t common include:
- Wood framing is significantly cheaper in both materials and labor
- Stone masons are less common and more expensive to hire than general framing crews
- Stone construction takes considerably longer to complete
- Modern building codes and insulation standards are easier to meet with framed construction
- Regional building traditions in the U.S. developed around abundant timber resources, unlike parts of Europe where stone was more readily available and traditionally used
While solid stone construction remains rare, stone veneer has become a popular way for American homeowners to get the appearance of stone without the cost and complexity of full stone construction, allowing the look to be added to standard framed homes.
