The two most common types of plaster used for interior walls are traditional lime plaster and gypsum plaster (often called plaster of Paris in its raw form). Gypsum plaster is the more common choice in modern construction because it dries faster, is easier to apply, and costs less than lime-based options.
Other plaster types worth knowing:
- Veneer plaster: a thin, modern application over specialized gypsum board, offering a smooth, durable finish with less labor than traditional three-coat plaster
- Traditional three-coat plaster: applied over wood or metal lath in multiple layers, common in older homes
- Lime plaster: valued for its breathability and historical accuracy, often used in restoration projects
- Acrylic or polymer-modified plaster: blends traditional plaster with modern additives for improved flexibility and crack resistance
For most contemporary homes, gypsum-based veneer plaster offers a good balance of durability, smooth finish, and manageable installation cost compared to traditional multi-coat lime plaster systems.
